The Skinny Rules

Like most families that are full of hungry kids - I am a member of Costco and every month I get their magazine called The Costco Connection.  Each month I look forward to the seasonal recipes and some of the featured articles.  This month, they have a great article on Bob Harper - you might recognize him as the hunky, tatted up trainer on The Biggest Loser.  He has just written a cookbook called The Skinny Rules: The Simple, Nonnegotiable Principles for Getting to Thin.  In this cookbook, Bob lists his "nonnegotiable rules" that can lead to successful weight loss.  Oddly enough, these are the same "rules" that I give to my clients when I'm coaching them for successful, healthy weight loss too!  These rules are easy to follow and can lead to healthy, attainable weight loss without trying too hard (but don't forget to add in some sort of physical activity daily to make the weight come off faster!).

The Skinny Rules

What's In:
-Lots of water at each meal;
-A real breakfast, such as oatmeal, eggs or plain Greek yogurt, doctored up with berries and nuts;
-Apples and berries every day, along with other fibrous fruits such as Asian pears, in certain quantities;
-Protein at every meal and lots of fiber;
-Unlimited amounts of certain vegetables - though they must be prepared correctly (favorites are kale and broccoli).

What's Out:
-All the typical culprits - added sweeteners in drinks and foods;
-Refined flours and grains;
-White potatoes loaded with fats;
-White rice;
-Fast foods;
-High salt foods;
-Fried foods.

What's Important:
-Learn to read food labels;
-Stop guessing about portion sizes;
-Have a meatless day each week;
-Make at least 10 meals a week at home;
-Cut off eating three hours before bed;
-Sleep right;
-Thankfully - allow yourself a splurge meal once a week!

The Extras:
-Eat certain foods at certain times, such as most of your carbs in the morning (little or none after lunch) and protein and fiber in the afternoon;
-Eat lean and green at night;
-Plan meals and prepare portion sizes on a Sunday evening for the week;
-Place certain smart snack foods, such as hard-boiled eggs, blueberries and Persian cucumbers, at eye level in the fridge.

Try to make some of these changes for you and your family - start living a healthy and happy life together.  You'll find that with these changes, you will sleep better at night, reduce your cravings, increase your energy levels, finally be able to shed those stubborn lbs, and stimulate your metabolism.  Give these rules a try and see how it can change your life for the better...Enjoy.
